Welcome to Our Story (operating at our-story.ai, "the Service", "we", "us"). These Terms and Conditions ("Terms") govern your access to the Service, whether you reach it through our website, an iOS or Android app, or any other client we publish. By creating an account, voting, sending chat, or otherwise interacting with the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. The nature of the Service

Our Story is a collaborative storytelling experience. Players collectively control shared characters ("pawns") by submitting commands; the system tallies votes, resolves outcomes through dice-style mechanics, and uses third-party large language models ("LLMs") and image-generation models to produce narration, descriptions, and imagery. The resulting story is the product of many users and AI-generated content combined; no single player owns a pawn, a world, or the resulting narrative.

2. Shared content and pawn context

Pawns, worlds, nodes, objectives, mobs, and chat are shared by all participating players. Specifically:

  • Any vote, command text, or LLM-context note you submit may be read by every other player who interacts with that pawn or shares its room. It may also be sent to our LLM providers as context for narration.
  • Other players may at any time vote on, override, or steer the same pawn in directions you did not intend. The collaborative vote resolves what actually happens.
  • Story beats, generated descriptions, generated images, and event logs persist as part of the shared world. You should treat anything you submit as public to all participants.
  • We may reset, restore, regenerate, archive, or delete pawns, worlds, items, or generated content at any time to maintain the Service, recover from incidents, balance gameplay, or remove content that violates these Terms.

3. AI-generated content disclaimer

Significant portions of the Service — including but not limited to node descriptions, pawn descriptions, mob behavior, narrative summaries, and generated portrait or scene imagery — are produced by third-party LLMs and image-generation models on demand. You acknowledge that:

  • AI-generated text and images can be inaccurate, inconsistent, offensive, biased, or factually wrong. They are not the considered opinions of Our Story or its operators.
  • The same input can produce different outputs across runs. Continuity is best-effort, not guaranteed.
  • Generated text and imagery may incidentally resemble copyrighted works, real persons, or trademarks. We do not warrant that any AI output is original, licensable, or fit for any particular purpose, and you must not assume it is.
  • You must not rely on AI-generated content in this game for medical, legal, financial, safety, or other consequential decisions.
  • Free-form text you submit (votes, "after !" LLM context notes, chat, objective descriptions, skill implementation descriptions, world-seed input) is transmitted to our LLM and image providers as part of generation. See our Privacy Policy for the list of providers.

4. Content rules

You agree not to submit content (including votes, chat, names, world seeds, and free-form LLM context) that:

  • Sexualizes minors, or attempts to instruct the AI to do so.
  • Threatens, harasses, dox-es, or impersonates a real person or another player.
  • Attempts to bypass content moderation, jailbreak the LLM, exfiltrate prompts, or extract private system data.
  • Promotes real-world violence, self-harm, terrorism, or illegal activity directed at real targets.
  • Infringes a third party's intellectual property or privacy rights.
  • Spams, floods, scrapes, or otherwise abuses the shared world.

We may remove content, suspend pawns, remove worlds, or terminate accounts at our discretion to enforce these rules. We may also forward content that appears to describe imminent harm to law enforcement.

5. Accounts and access

  • You must be at least 18 years old to create an account.
  • You are responsible for keeping your credentials confidential and for any activity that occurs under your account. Notify us promptly of any suspected unauthorized use.
  • We may suspend or terminate an account that violates these Terms, abuses the Service, or otherwise impacts other players' enjoyment.
  • On termination you lose access to the Service. Shared content you have already contributed remains part of the shared world and is not deleted by the act of leaving.

6. License you grant to us

When you submit votes, chat, free-form text, world seeds, or other content to the Service, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, transmit, modify (for example, to send to an LLM provider as part of a longer prompt), display, and otherwise use that content for the purpose of operating, improving, and promoting the Service across all platforms on which we publish it (currently web, with iOS and Android clients planned). This license survives termination of your account to the extent necessary to preserve the shared world.

7. Ownership of AI-generated output

AI-generated text and images produced inside the Service are not owned by you. They are made available for collective in-game use under the same shared license as the rest of the world. Reproduction or use outside the Service of AI-generated content drawn from the shared world is discouraged because of the uncertain copyright status of AI-generated material and the shared authorship described above.

8. Platform-specific terms (iOS, Android)

Where you access the Service through a mobile app distributed via a third-party app store (currently planned: Apple App Store and Google Play), those stores' own terms also apply to your installation and use of the app. Specifically:

  • For iOS: Apple is not a party to these Terms and is not responsible for the Service. Apple is a third-party beneficiary of these Terms with the right to enforce them against you.
  • For Android: Google is not a party to these Terms and is not responsible for the Service.
  • In-app purchases and subscriptions, if and when offered, are processed by the relevant app store and governed by their refund and consumer-protection rules in addition to these Terms.
  • Crashes, payment disputes, and refund requests on a mobile platform should be raised first with the relevant app store; we will cooperate as required by the store's developer rules.

9. Service availability, changes, and beta status

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available". It is under active development. We may add, modify, regress, or remove features, worlds, or game mechanics at any time without notice. We do not guarantee that LLM- or image-generation features will be available continuously, free of cost, or of any particular quality, since they depend on upstream providers.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Service, its operators, and its affiliates are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including loss of data, loss of profits, or claims arising from AI-generated content, shared-world resets, vote outcomes, or third-party provider outages. Our total aggregate liability for any claim arising out of or relating to the Service is capped at the greater of (a) USD $50 and (b) the amount you paid us for the Service in the 12 months preceding the event giving rise to the claim.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Our Story and its operators from any claim, damage, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising from content you submit, your violation of these Terms, or your infringement of any third-party right.

12. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be announced in-product or by email where we have a verified address on file. Continued use of the Service after a change constitutes acceptance.

13. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the operator's jurisdiction. Mandatory consumer-rights protections in your country of residence still apply where they would override these Terms.
